Canon RF 35mm f1.4 L VCM Lens - 1656281

The RF35mm F1.4 L VCM is an entirely new L-series lens, targeting a wide range of still-image and video shooters, with a combination of very moderate wide-angle coverage, a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, and excellent optical design. On a full frame camera this lens gives you a slightly wide-angle look which has for decades been used in photojournalism and street photography, and has become a very popular wedding shoot look.  On the video side, this lens really shines with a dedicated manual Iris ring, and a new linear focus motor called a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) that is virtually silent.  The VCM works in tandem with a Nano USM on the floating focus unit for incredibly fast autofocus.  And finally, focus breathing is barely noticeable on this incredibly versatile lens.

What our Experts Think
  • Classic wide‑angle with modern design: A premium 35 mm prime offering a natural field of view that excels for street, environmental portraiture, travel, and narrative storytelling.
  • Fast aperture for low‑light & bokeh: The f/1.4 maximum aperture delivers strong low‑light capability and creamy background separation, ideal for both photos and cinematic video.
  • Hybrid photo/video lens: Built as part of Canon’s new “VCM” series, optimized for both stills and video, with a decoupled manual iris ring and minimal focus breathing.
  • Excellent optical performance: Reviewers note impressive sharpness and contrast, outperforming older RF and EF 35 mm options while remaining relatively compact.
  • Smooth & quiet autofocus: Voice Coil Motor (VCM) delivers fast, accurate, and nearly silent focusing—great for run‑and‑gun shooting and hybrid workflows.
  • Professional build quality: Weather sealing, robust optics, and an 11‑blade diaphragm lend a solid, high‑end feel suited for demanding use.
  • Considerations: No built‑in image stabilization—pairing with a body that has IBIS or good stabilization strategy is recommended for hand‑held low‑light video.
