It was originally intended to be a high-banked 4 km oval (inspired by Daytona) under a deal with NASCAR, but funding ran short and only one steeply banked turn (“Daiichi”) was completed. Instead, the project was converted into a road course, which opened in late 1965. The result was a very fast track with a nearly one-mile straight feeding into the huge banked corner – a combination that proved extremely dangerous, as early races saw major crashes on the 30-degree banking. By the early 1970s, Fuji earned a reputation as one of the world’s most perilous circuits due to that layout. A fatal accident in 1974 prompted the owners to finally reconfigure the track to bypass the banked turn, creating a safer 4.3 km course with new hairpins by 1975.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1173\" data-end=\"2619\"\u003eFuji Speedway made history in 1976 by hosting the first-ever Formula One Japanese Grand Prix – the finale of that year’s F1 season. In torrential rain and mist at the foot of Mount Fuji, James Hunt and Niki Lauda’s championship battle came to a head; Lauda withdrew due to the dangerous conditions, and Hunt’s points finish clinched him the world title (Mario Andretti won the race itself). The following year’s 1977 Japanese GP was marred by tragedy when Gilles Villeneuve’s car careened off the track, killing two spectators, after which Formula One left Fuji for three decade. Despite the loss of F1, Fuji remained a cornerstone of Japanese motorsport through the late 1970s and 1980s. It hosted the Fuji Grand Champion Series and other national races, and international sports car events like the FIA World Sportscar Championship from 1982–1988. Organizers added chicanes in the ‘80s to slow the ultra-fast course, but the main straight was still nearly 1.5 km long, making Fuji famous for slipstream battles and high top speeds. The renovation preserved Fuji’s characteristically long straight while updating safety and infrastructure. Fuji’s return to the Formula One calendar soon followed: it hosted the Japanese Grand Prix in 2007 and 2008, ending a 30-year F1 absence and briefly shifting the home GP away from Suzuka Circuit. Fittingly, the 2007 race at Fuji was another rain-soaked thriller, with the first 19 laps behind a safety car and rookie Lewis Hamilton taking the victory. Today, Fuji Speedway continues to play a major role in motorsport. It’s a regular stop for the Super GT series (including the famous Golden Week Fuji 500 km race) and the World Endurance Championship’s 6 Hours of Fuji.
